Dentures Are Effective at Replacing the Function of Your Missing Teeth

Posted .

As the years go by, multiple cavities and complications from severe periodontal disease can cause the loss of multiple teeth. When this happens, there might not be sufficient bone structure in place to fully restore the function of your mouth with dental implants. In a situation this severe, Dr. Emanuel Amato might recommend extracting all of your teeth to prepare your mouth for a custom set of dentures.

Sometimes, you might only need to have your upper teeth or lower teeth extracted. Yet most people need to have both sets of teeth replaced by dentures in a single session.

After the extraction, your gums will be sutured and Dr. Emanuel Amato will make an impression of the structure of your gums. This will be sent to a dental lab to serve as a guide for crafting your custom dentures.

The final dentures will be custom created to fit firmly with the existing structure of your gums. However, many denture wearers like to use denture adhesive for an extra-secure hold. Denture adhesive also has the added benefit of preventing stray food particles from getting between the base of the dentures and your gums.

It’s important that you thoroughly rinse your dentures when you take them out each night. You should then give them a gentle brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush and denture polish. You can then soak them and store them in a safe place.
